The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture is a rich and immersive learning experience intended for all ages. Unfortunately, because the Burke is largely a visual experience, many seniors cannot access museum content due to small text on labels and low lighting. Lack of suitable seating options also poses a challenge to seniors who need frequent rest.
Our design response consists of fixed screen installations with a handheld phone attachment in each exhibit, which visitors can access while seated. Seniors can hear pre-recorded tours from museum curators and experts, who will guide them through each exhibit with images and large text that accompany spoken audio. Through this museum-wide system, seniors who would otherwise be unable to access museum content for long periods of time can be included in this unique journey of learning and exploration.
