“It’s so hard to have a real, solid community when you’re constantly on the move and all the friends you make are also just passing through.” Van-dwelling is a powerful, freeing, and sometimes lonely lifestyle. It’s hard to approach others when you’re both painfully aware of how short-lived this connection will be — after all, what will you be able to take away from this interaction? What will stay with you when you’re thousands of miles apart again? Thus, Chord is designed to be a low-energy, low-stakes yet meaningful approach to interpersonal connection for van-dwellers despite the fleetingness of their contact with others. Chord consists of collectible trading cards and a special card reader, which allows you to record audio snippets of your van-dwelling journey onto the cards and play them back. With Chord, you can then revisit the echoes of the Grand Canyon or the waves by Santa Monica pier and share these experiences with others. Each recording that exists within a Chord card can be given to someone else and remind them of a new sight, a new sound, and a new person.
