NOVO is a sustainable footwear design concept that features fully biodegradable materials, a water bubble cushion, and a plantable seed housed within the sole. This concept was born as we set out to design footwear that could be competitive in the hype streetwear market without contributing to the harmful fast-fashion consequences. NOVO is a shoe that can grow with the user, even after it can no longer be worn. As NOVO nears the end of its product life cycle, the water bubble cushion within the sole will pop as an indicator that the shoe is reaching the extent of its wear. Once this happens, the seed that lives under the water bubble will begin its life cycle, and the user can tear their shoe apart to access the seed-embedded sole. At this point, the shoe owner can responsibly dispose of the biodegradable upper, plant their NOVO seed sole, and thus begin to create new life from an old product. NOVO aims to facilitate a deeper connection between an individual and their objects by promoting a system that allows a product to transcend its physical limitations and continue to interact with the user, even after its initial physical form is no longer usable.
